New Early Childhood Minister 2010

So which lucky MP is now in charge of early education and care?

With Julia Gillard’s announcement of her new Ministry yesterday, two people have been named with responsibility for our sector. Kate Ellis, our previous Minister, is now the Minister for Employment Participation and Childcare, whilst Peter Garrett is now Minister for Schools, Early Childhood and Youth.

What does this mean for children? Having Early Childhood elevated to a Cabinet level position shows the importance that the Prime Minister places on policy issues connected with children. What does it mean for children’s services? This is not yet clear. On one hand dividing childcare and children between two Ministers could be significant, but depending on the break-up of responsibilities, it may not. If Kate Ellis retains responsibility for the National Quality Framework, the separation of childcare and education may be of some concern, as could the grouping of childcare with workforce participation.

The new Ministry will be sworn in by Governor-General Quentin Bryce on Monday.
