Kitchen Assistant

Eltham Childcare Co-operative is seeking passionate and reliable Assistant Cook to join our team. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys preparing nutritious meals for young children.

About the Role

The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily operation of the kitchen by assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring food safety standards are met. This role contributes to providing fresh, nutritious, safe, and appealing meals that support children’s health, wellbeing, and developing food relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation

  • Support the Service Cook to plan and prepare healthy, balanced meals and snacks for children aged 0–6 years
  • Assist with food preparation (washing, peeling, chopping ingredients)
  • Prepare simple meals and snacks under supervision
  • Portion and serve food as required

Cleaning & Hygiene

  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Maintain a clean and organised kitchen environment
  • Follow strict food safety and hygiene practices

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain food safety documentation and cleaning schedules
  • Follow all food handling guidelines and procedures
  • Ensure correct storage of food (labelling, temperature control)
  • Assist with stock rotation

Child Safety & Wellbeing

  • Cater for allergies, cultural needs, and dietary requirements (including vegetarian options)
  • Support positive food experiences for children within the learning environment
  • Cater for allergies, cultural needs, and dietary requirements (including vegetarian options)

Support Duties

  • Assist with receiving and storing deliveries
  • Inform cook/supervisor of low stock or issues
  • Support special dietary requirements (as directed)

About You

  • Experience as a cook within early childhood
  • Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
  • Knowledge of nutrition and allergy-safe food preparation
  • Strong organisation and time management skills
  • Warm, team-focused approach and enjoyment working around children

Qualifications

  •  Food Safety Handling Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
  • Willingness to obtain Child Safety and Protection training
  • Experience in a kitchen or childcare setting
