Council owns and operates the Cobar Shire & TAFE Library, Great Cobar Heritage Centre, Lilliane Brady Village (aged care facility), Children's Services, Youth & Fitness Centre as well as works depots in Euabalong and Cobar.

Kubby House Childcare Centre is a 31-place service and is the only long day care provider in town. Council has recently been awarded funding to build a brand new Early Learning Centre (ELC) to meet the growing needs of our community, which has been architecturally designed specifically to exceed best practice industry standards. Our new centre is expected to be 'open for business' in January 2023, with the capacity to accommodate up to 88 children.

About you

We are seeking an enthusiastic, kind, and caring Room Leader to deliver outstanding education and care for the children of the Kubby House Childcare Centre. Your previous experience as a leader combined with your sound understanding of the early learning years framework and national quality standards and your ability to recognise and develop the strengths in your team will see you succeed in this role.

Our preferred candidate will be Diploma qualified and passionate about early childhood education and play based learning, with a commitment to bringing learning to life through developmentally appropriate programs that inspire the children in our care to reach their full potential. We are looking for someone who brings their best self to work and builds positive relationships with the children and families to create a safe, fun, inviting, and nurturing learning environment.

About the role

Reporting to the Centre Coordinator, this role is responsible for developing and implementing an innovative learning program, documenting the children's learning journey, and ensuring the room operates efficiently, cost effectively and in accordance with the required standards, legislation and regulations.

The Room Leader (0-3yrs) needs to be an excellent communicator and help foster a high-performance team culture whilst providing the support, coaching and quality mentoring for educators in an inclusive environment for our children and their families.

The current service has two rooms 0-3 years (12 places) and 3-5 years (19 places), our brand new ELC will allow us to grow and meet the current and future demand, specifically in the under two age group.

This position has been classified as Band 2 Level 2 ($31.65 - $36.64) under Council's salary system, with employment terms and conditions in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award, working 38 hours a week with one RDO each month. For the right candidate, Council will consider VISA sponsorship under our Orana DAMA Labour Agreement.

In accordance with the NSW Public Health Order, Council staff working in child care services are required to be double vaccinated and therefore proof of vaccination is required on application.

From bubbles to bears and cats to coffee — the endless value of emergent curriculum

Stephanie Seidler is an experienced early educator and published author who is passionate about promoting meaningful educational experiences for children. Based in New York, she is an advocate of using emergent curriculum as part of a responsive intentional teaching process, and loves to share tools, tips and ideas on her Facebook page. 

Stephanie recently published a book called Bubble Babies, celebrating diversity, inclusivity, and connection building for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Bubbles have been a favourite interest for so many of the children she’s educated over the years.

Discussing disability and inclusion — how toys can build empathy and open-mindedness

Once upon a time disability was a taboo topic. Today, awareness of disability is on the rise through events such as International Day of People with Disability (3 December) and the growing acknowledgement of disability in the community.

Many early educators are embracing the opportunity to open the discussion around disability and inclusion with children. We speak with Leanne Fretten of all-abilities childcare centre Mikarie about their child-first approach, ask author of 'What happened to you?' James Catchpole about avoiding the 'inspiration trope', and share how toys and resources such as dolls and books can promote empathy and open-mindedness.

Increased turnover and a need for targeted funding - new workforce report reveals challenges and solutions

A new report has been released examining ECEC workforce pressures which have been exacerbated by the pandemic, their impact on ECEC services, and possible ways forward for the sector. 

Written by CELA (Community Early Learning Australia), ELAA (Early Learning Association Australia) and CCC (Community Child Care Association), the report is based on findings from almost 750 respondents representing over 3,300 early education and care services across a wide range of service types. The report will be used to advocate for our workforce at both Federal and State levels of Government.

The report reveals that staff turnover has increased in 50% of services surveyed since the start of the pandemic, while nearly half of job vacancies in ECEC services remain unfilled. Services reported that poor pay and conditions contributed to a lack of applicants, while a lack of quality graduates contributed to jobs remaining vacant.
