CELA’s Learning and Development facilitators come from a wide range of early education backgrounds, equipping them with practical sector based experience which is second to none. All our facilitators have a common passion for meaningful growth in every educators practice, resulting in better outcomes for children.

Kerrie Maguire

Kerrie Maguire has been working in children’s services for over 20 years. During this time, she has fostered a passionate belief in the significance educators have in the lives of the children they work with. She is a resourceful problem-solver with a broad skill base across early childhood learning and development. Kerrie’s focus is on practice, programming, documenting, effective communication and team building, in Long Day Care, Preschool, OSHC and Mobile children’s services. She is a highly experienced facilitator who has successfully delivered training across a range of methods such as face-to-face and webinar. Combined with a deep understanding of the National Quality Framework, Learning Frameworks and Supplementary regulations, she possesses the ability to provide effective one-on-one advisory support, mentoring and training.

Louise Black

With a background in local government as a teacher director, and as a validator and trainer with the National Child Care Accreditation Council, Louise Black brings many years of sector experience. She has been an integral part of the Learning and Development team at CELA and specialises in quality assurance and training needs analysis, across all service types. Louise designs customised training to meet the specific needs of individual educators and teams. Louise also leads the CELA Little Scientists program and is passionate about the professional growth of educators.

Catherine Fraser

Catherine Fraser has been a teacher and director in early childhood services for 25 years, working across the sector in Long Day Care, Preschool and Primary School. Her extensive experience and subsequent strengths as a director have led to a passionate focus on delivering training in areas of team building, change management, communication and leadership. Catherine has a strong commitment and belief in inclusive education for children and families with additional needs. She has a passion for the wellbeing of early childhood educators and an approach to common sense problem solving and communication. Catherine has a Diploma of Teaching, Early Childhood from UWS.

Karen Roberts

Karen has been an early childhood professional for 42 years. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and Master of Early Childhood (Special Education). Karen has worked as a teacher, director, special educator, TAFE teacher, trainer, as well as being a guest university lecturer and tutor. She is currently employed as a Manager of Children’s Services for local government, and is also a self- employed writer, trainer and consultant. Her areas of interest and expertise include children’s rights, child protection, positive behaviour guidance, and inclusion, as well as communication, relationships and team building.

Jenny Hind

Jenny currently manages a community preschool and has a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management, Cert IV TAE and over 30 years experience teaching and learning in early childhood and adult education settings. Jenny believes that we gain knowledge best when we are in supportive environments where people are valued, and learning is enjoyable. Much of Jenny’s career has evolved from working with children with inclusion support needs and she delights in the joy of each child’s development in settings with respectful family involvement.

Helen Thornton

Helen is a highly motivated individual with a broad background and training as a teacher, director, coordinator, lecturer, consultant, mentor, trainer and presenter. Helen has more than 30 years’ experience working in education, in Australia and the UK.
Helen has a particular interest in advocacy, mentoring, early childhood, positive leadership, inter-generational opportunities, mental health and well-being, in addition to recognising the importance of strong support and professional networks within communities. She has a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood), Diploma in Education (London University), Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management CHC 60312, and Cert IV in Training and Assessment TAE 40110.

Penny Birdsall

Penny is an Early Childhood Professional with over twenty-five years experience in a variety of Early Childhood settings in both New South Wales and Queensland. She has been an Early Childhood Teacher, Director, Manager, Tutor and Adult Education Assessor and Trainer within the Tafe system. She has worked for community-based, council, private and large non-profit organisations. She is also a qualified yoga teacher.

She is passionate about exploring environments and the benefits of nature play for children and how this relates to their well-being.

She is very versatile, with a broad range of knowledge in many areas including the NQF and EYLF.

Deb Williams

Debra Williams

Debra has been working in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector for over 35 years in a variety of capacities including as Consultant, Facilitator, Adviser, Lecturer, Director, Manager and Publisher.

She holds a degree in Education, Diploma of Management and Graduate Certificate in Research and is currently completing a PhD exploring educator perspectives in the implementation of critical reflection as part of the National Quality Standard for Early Education and Care.
