Learn practical strategies to support diverse communication styles and embed neuroinclusive practices in your setting. This session explores Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools and approaches that help every child feel heard, valued, and connected.

Overview

Creating environments where every child can connect

Our desire to connect with each other and communicate is an integral part of what it is to be human. When we embrace different preferences and methods of communication, we honour children’s fundamental rights to express themselves and to have a say in matters that affect them.

At the heart of the neurodiversity paradigm is the recognition that every mind and every mode of communication is uniquely valuable.

Yet in busy learning environments, communication differences can be misunderstood. Children who express themselves beyond spoken language may struggle to be truly heard.

So, how can we create spaces where every child feels: recognised, understood and empowered to connect in their own way?

This session explores how neuroinclusive communication can transform your setting by breaking down barriers created by subtle biases in language and expression.

In practice

Exploring AAC and inclusive communication strategies

You will gain insight into Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), not just as tools, but as essential pathways to connection. These include:

  • Spoken and signed words
  • Images and gestures
  • Eye gaze and alternative communication devices
  • Creative expression

Join us as we explore practical strategies to embed neuroinclusive communication into your learning environments.

Because every child’s voice deserves to be heard, recognised, and valued.

Note

This session builds on the concepts introduced in our session Embracing Neurodiversity: A Strengths-Based Approach. Participation in the earlier session is not required to enrol.

This course aligns to Standard 1 (Know students and how they learn) and Standard 4 (Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.) of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

The facilitator was engaging and very knowledgeable. Sally
